Curious? Want to know details about Maui County’s population growth or median age? How about the number of island hotel rooms or landownership in the islands?

Well, suffer that curiosity itch no longer. The 50th edition of the “State of Hawaii Data Book,” the 2017 edition, has arrived. It’s available in an electronic version and can be found on the state Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism website, dbedt.hawaii.gov/economic/databook/.

The data may be downloaded in whole or in part as either PDF or Excel files.

According to an announcement, the book is the “most comprehensive statistical book about Hawaii in a single compilation.” It has more than 800 data tables, classified into 24 sections.

It covers areas such as population, education, environment, economics, energy, business enterprises, government, tour-ism and transportation.

In no particular order, here’s some Maui County-specific tidbits gleaned from the 2017 data book:

• The median age of a Maui County resident in 2017 was 41.2 years old, or 2.2 years older than the statewide median age of 39. The oldest median age, by county, was in Hawaii County with a median age of 42.5.

• Maui County’s resident population (including Kalawao County on Molokai) grew 11,423, or 7.4 percent, from 154,925 on April 1, 2010, to 166,348 on July 1, 2017. Resident births during the period were 14,315, and resident deaths were 8,409. Net foreign migrants were 5,408, and net domestic migrants were 174.

• Maui County’s percentage of the state’s population has grown from 10.6 percent in 2000 to 11.7 percent in 2017. The City and County of Honolulu’s share has dropped from 72.3 to 69.3 percent in the same period. The resident populations of Hawaii and Kauai counties have grown as well.

• State government is the largest landowner on Maui island, with 154,150.9 acres, while the federal government has 33,660.3 acres. Maui’s largest private landowner is Alexander & Baldwin, with 65,451.3 acres on Maui. (A&B has 86,514.4 acres statewide, including 21,015.6 acres on Kauai and 37.8 acres on Oahu.)

• Molokai Ranch is the largest landowner on the Friendly Isle, with 53,797.5 acres. The state owns 49,052.8 acres on Molokai.

• Pulama Lana’i owns the most land on Lanai, 89,075.1 acres, while the state has 592.3 acres.

• Maui produced 270.04 million kilowatt hours of wind power, or 42.3 percent of the state’s total of 639.13 million kWh in 2016. Maui’s portion of solar energy was 6.53 million kWh, or 7.4 percent of the state’s total of 88.51 million kWh in the same year.

• The number of Maui’s visitor accommodations has grown 56.8 percent in 30 years from 13,849 in 1987 to 21,723 in 2017. Statewide, Maui island has the most rooms (11,411) that cost more than $500 per night. Wailea had the highest revenue per available room statewide, with $455.52 in 2017.

• Maui County has the lowest real property tax rate for hotels and resorts, $9.37 per $1,000 of net taxable value. That compares to $12.90 for the City and County of Honolulu, $11.55 for Hawaii County and $10.85 for Kauai County.

The data book is the most popular item on the department’s website, according to Director Luis Salaveria.

“DBEDT researchers collected and compiled data from all private and public sources about all aspects of Hawaii and put them together to create this comprehensive source of information for anyone who wants to know Hawaii,” Salaveria said.

Researchers extracted data and added more to produce a county-level data report called “County Social, Business and Economic Trends in Hawaii.” It will be released later this year, said state economist Eugene Tian.

DBEDT’s Research and Economic Analysis Division maintains a historical series of tables and updates the data continuously throughout the year. The historical series and the update can also be found on the department’s website at dbedt.hawaii.gov/economic/databook/.

The department’s website is at dbedt.hawaii.gov.
